Committed to Education & Community

The Society of St. George supports several educational, charitable, and community-focused endeavors.

Scholarships

The society’s scholarship program is open to any student of English descent who resides within 50 to 75 miles of Philadelphia. The Board of Directors works closely with Arcadia University in Glenside, PA, the administrator of their large study abroad programs for students from many colleges. Once an English ancestor is confirmed by our historian and the application and amount of funding is approved by the board, Arcadia University permits the scholarship winners to select an English school or summer study abroad program. Most popular are the Arcadia in London Summer Programs. Students can customize their 4-8 week London experience for their academic, personal, and professional goals. Students who need to maintain their financial aid eligibility can enroll in 6 credits during the two sessions.

Community Support

Through various fundraising efforts and contributions received from our members, the society supports several programs and schools in the Philadelphia area.

Society gifts to The Duke of Edinburgh Award allow for youth to join Philadelphia Outward Bound, which connects students with the opportunity to experience outdoor education and adventure activities that push them to leave their comfort zone in order to build character and grow mentally and physically.
St. James School provides students 4-8 with a holistic, faith-based education in the Allegheny West neighborhood of Philadelphia. Society funding supports student scholarships in this rich environment, an oasis among a largely under resourced population. The campus boasts small class sizes, healthcare support, dining facilities, graduate support, and much more.
Christ Church, Philadelphia, founded in 1695, is deeply connected to the society with many early society members in regular attendance. Rooted in shared spiritual values, the relationship continues today with the society supporting Christ Church’s music program and celebrating their historic mission.

Per the society’s original mission, to the aid “of Englishmen in distress,” the society also still assists in limited selection, financial or otherwise, men and women of English heritage in need, whether or not they are members.
